From Tulips to Pumpkins: Your Ultimate Guide to Maine Seasonal Picking
There’s something about the seasons in Maine that makes you want to slow down and savor them, because before you know it, they’re gone!
One of my favorite ways to fully experience each season is by getting outside and picking what it has to offer. From rows of colorful tulips in the spring to wild blueberries along the coast in the height of summer, these small moments turn into some of the most memorable days.
Whether you’re planning a weekend activity, looking for a reason to explore a new town or just want to romanticize the season a little more, this guide walks you through what to pick (and when) across Maine.

🌷 Spring (May–Early June): Tulip Picking
Where to Go
Chipman Farm
Located in Poland on Range Hill Rd, Chipman Farm offers u-pick tulips for $1.75 per stem, with blooms typically peaking in late May. Timing can be a little tricky, so it’s best to keep an eye on their social media for updates before you go.
I visited one year around Mother’s Day with my mom, and we picked out stems to make our own bouquet together. It ended up being such a fun and memorable way to spend the day.
What to Expect
Rows of vibrant tulips in peak bloom
Pay-per-stem picking
A short picking window (timing is everything!)
Tips
Go early in the season for the fullest blooms
Wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy
Bring a camera: this could be a pretty photo opportunity!
🍓 Early Summer (June–July): Strawberry Picking
Where to Go
Pineland Farms
A classic pick‑your‑own destination in New Gloucester, Pineland Farms grows strawberries (along with other fruits like blueberries and raspberries) and opens its PYO fields in June. You can bring your own containers or use ones provided.
What to Expect
One of the first “true” summer activities
Quick, easy, and perfect for a morning outing
Tips
Go early in the day before fields get picked over
Look for fully red berries, they are the sweetest and won’t ripen further after picking
Check farm updates before heading out
Bring cash and containers just in case (for small farms)
🫐 Mid–Late Summer (July–August): Blueberry Picking
This is peak summer in Maine and if you do one seasonal activity, make it this!
Maine is known as the wild blueberry capital, and there’s nothing quite like spending a warm day picking berries with ocean views nearby.
Where to Go
Bradbury Mountain Berry Farm
Bradbury Mountain Berry Farm is a great spot for an easy and scenic blueberry picking day. The fields are open and peaceful, with plenty of space to wander and take your time filling your bucket.
What I love most about blueberry picking is how relaxed it feels. You’re not rushing, just slowly picking as you go, usually snacking on a few along the way.
If you want to make a day of it, pair your visit with a hike at Bradbury Mountain State Park nearby or pack a picnic to enjoy after.
What to Expect
A slower, more relaxed picking experience compared to other fruits
Wild blueberries that are smaller, sweeter, and perfect for snacking
Tips
Go in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid peak heat
Wear comfortable shoes since you’ll be walking through fields
Bring sunscreen, water, and a container if needed
🌻 Late Summer (August–September): Sunflowers + Flowers
Late summer in Maine is when everything feels full and golden, and sunflower fields are one of the best ways to soak it all in.
Where to Go
Little River Flower Farm
Little River Flower Farm is a beautiful flower farm in southern Maine with a reputation for blooms and bouquets. They grow a range of seasonal flowers (including sunflowers), and while their offerings can vary year to year it’s definitely worth checking their flower availability in summer.
What to Expect
Tall sunflower fields + late-summer blooms
Perfect photo moments throughout the fields
The chance to pick your own stems and make a beautiful bouquet or centerpiece at home
Tips
Golden hour is the best time to go
Check bloom timing (it varies each year)
Bring a bag, vase, or jar to transport your flowers home

🍎 Fall (September–October): Apple Picking
Where to Go
Randall Orchard
Located in Standish, not far from Portland, Randall Orchards is a popular spot for a cozy fall outing. I love the small, authentic feel of the farm. It has a farm store where you can pick up fresh apples, cider, and local goods, plus a small donut shack right on the road in.
Thompson's Orchard
A lovely spot for apple picking, Thompson’s Orchards in New Gloucester also hosts a fall festival with a craft fair and food trucks. I went one year, and it was such a fun way to spend a fall day. The orchard has plenty of apple varieties to pick and scenic views perfect for a relaxed afternoon.
What to Expect
Peak cozy season in Maine with crisp air and colorful foliage
Rows of apple trees with a variety of apples for picking
Fresh cider, warm cider donuts, and other orchard treats
Fall festivals and seasonal activities like craft fairs and food trucks
Tips
Go earlier in the season for the best apple selection
Bring layers, as it gets chilly in the morning and evening
Don’t skip the cider and donuts, they’re a must
🎃 Bonus: Pumpkin Picking (October)
Where to Go
Pumpkin Valley Farm
Pumpkin Valley Farm in Dayton has a pumpkin patch where you can walk through the field to choose your own pumpkins. It’s a fun fall destination with lots of classic fall vibes and farm activities alongside pumpkin picking.
What to Expect
Classic fall activity
Perfect for a weekend outing with friends or family
Tips
Pair with a farm stand visit
Go earlier in October for the best selection
🧺 Make It a Day: My Favorite Way to Do PYO
Instead of just going to a farm and heading home, turn your picking trip into a full day:
Start with a coffee stop, you need to stay caffeinated of course
Spend time picking and exploring
End with lunch, a walk, or a scenic view nearby
It’s such a simple way to make the most of the season, and honestly, these are the days I remember the most.
