Itinerary in Brief:

  • Fuel Up: Breakfast at Beacon Hill Books & Café

  • Explore and photograph: Beacon Hill's charming streets

  • Visit: Boston Athnaeum & Granary Burying Ground

  • Browse: Brattle Bookshop

  • Lunch: Boston's Chinatown

  • Shop: Seaport District and Harborwalk

  • Bike: Bunker Hill Monument

Beacon Hill Books & Café

Just a short walk from Boston Common, make your way down charming Charles Street to your first stop, Beacon Hill Books & Café. Tucked in the back of the bookstore, down a cozy brick hallway, you’ll find the sweetest little café. We grabbed a table in the small courtyard and fueled up with coffee and breakfast before starting the day.

Afterward, wander back through the bookstore itself. It’s spread across three beautiful floors filled with books and thoughtful little gifts. Don’t skip the third floor. It’s the children’s section, but it also hides a fun surprise: a mini print vending machine where you can grab a tiny souvenir for just $1 in quarters.

Beacon Hill

After breakfast, take some time to wander through the Beacon Hill neighborhood itself. It’s one of the most picturesque areas in Boston, with brick townhouses, vintage street lanterns, and charming cobblestone roads. In the fall, you’ll spot festive doorways adorned with pumpkins and seasonal décor that make every corner feel straight out of a postcard.

And don’t forget to stop by Acorn Street. It’s one of the most photographed streets in Boston for a reason!

Acorn Street, a cobblestone street with brick buildings and lanterns.

Boston Athenæum & Granary Burying Ground

Next, make your way toward the Boston Athenæum, one of the oldest independent libraries in the United States. Even if you don’t go inside, the building itself is stunning, and the quiet, book-filled interior is worth a peek (at $8 admission). It’s the perfect stop for anyone who loves history, architecture, or a little old-world charm.

Right nearby, you’ll find the Granary Burying Ground, one of Boston’s most historic cemeteries. Wander the paths and you’ll see the resting places of notable figures like Paul Revere and Samuel Adams. The grounds are especially beautiful in the fall, with colorful leaves scattered among the centuries-old headstones.

Brattle Bookshop

Just across from Boston Common, you’ll find Brattle Bookshop, one of America’s oldest and most charming used bookstores. It’s a must visit for book lovers, with rows of treasures inside and outdoor shelves set up in the alleyway, perfect for browsing and snapping a few photos.

Boston's Historic Chinatown

Next, head over to Boston’s historic Chinatown, a vibrant neighborhood full of colorful streets, bustling shops, and delicious food. It’s the perfect spot to take a short stroll and soak in the lively atmosphere.

Stop by Ho Yuen Bakery to try a moon cake, a traditional decorative cake filled with a sweet paste. While you’re there, you can also grab lunch at one of the neighborhood’s many eateries, whether you are craving dim sum, hot pot, or other flavorful Asian dishes.

Seaport District and Harborwalk

After lunch, make your way to Boston’s Seaport District, a lively waterfront area full of shops, restaurants, and modern architecture. It’s a great place to wander, do a little shopping, or simply enjoy the views of the harbor.

Take a stroll along the Harborwalk, a scenic path that runs along the water. You will get beautiful views of the skyline, boats bobbing in the harbor, and plenty of photo opportunities. It’s the perfect spot to relax, people watch, and soak in Boston’s coastal charm.

Bunker Hill Monument

End your day with a visit to the Bunker Hill Monument in Charlestown, a historic landmark that commemorates one of the first major battles of the American Revolution. You can admire the monument from the ground or, if you’re feeling energetic, climb the 294 steps to the top for sweeping views of Boston and the harbor.

Note: Be sure to check the operating hours before you go.

The surrounding Bunker Hill Memorial Park is a lovely spot for a short stroll, and in the fall, the crisp air and colorful leaves make it especially picturesque. It’s a perfect way to wrap up a day of exploring Boston’s history and charm.

Tips:

  • Blue Bikes station: Grab a bike at Boston’s convenient city bike rental program. A day pass costs just $10 and gives you unlimited 30-minute rides, making it easy to hop between your planned stops. Download the Blue Bikes app in advance so you can quickly scan and ride!

  • Wear comfortable shoes: Between cobblestone streets in Beacon Hill and walking along the Harborwalk, you’ll be on your feet a lot. Comfortable shoes will make the day much more enjoyable.

  • Bring a water bottle and snacks: Even with stops for coffee and lunch, having water and a few small snacks on hand will keep your energy up for all the exploring.

  • Check hours ahead: Many small cafés, bakeries, and historic sites have seasonal or limited hours, so it’s a good idea to look them up before your visit.

  • Capture the fall colors: Early October through mid-November is prime time for autumn leaves in Boston. Keep your camera or phone handy for the colorful streets, park paths, and waterfront views.

  • Plan for the weather: Boston fall weather can be unpredictable. Layered clothing works best so you can adjust as temperatures change throughout the day.
