Explore Scenic Trails Along the Coast with These Top Maine Ocean Hikes
There’s something about Maine that just hits differently when you can see the ocean. Whether it’s a quiet coastal trail, dramatic cliffs, or a sweeping view of endless blue, these hikes combine two of the best things about the state: fresh air and salty sea views.
If you’re looking to get outside and experience Maine from above the shoreline, here are some of the best hikes with ocean views across the state.
Morse Mountain to Sewell Beach, Phippsburg
If you’re looking for a coastal hike that feels peaceful and a little more off-the-radar, this is one of Maine’s best.
Located in Morse Mountain to Sewell Beach, this trail starts with a wide, easy path through fields before gradually making its way toward the coast. The landscape shifts as you go, and just when you think it can’t get better, you arrive at Sewell Beach.
The beach itself is long, quiet, and often far less crowded than other coastal spots. It’s the kind of place where you can take your time, walk along the shoreline, and really soak in the views.
Good to know:
Distance: ~4 miles round trip
Difficulty: Easy

The Cliff Trail, Monhegan Island
For dramatic coastal views and a true Maine island experience, this hike is hard to beat.
Located on Monhegan Island, the Cliff Trail runs along the eastern edge of the island, with steep drops and sweeping views of the Atlantic the entire way. Waves crash below the cliffs, and the scenery feels wild and untouched.
Getting here takes a little extra effort (you’ll need to take a ferry), but that’s part of what makes it so special. It feels completely removed from the mainland in the best way.
Good to know:
Distance: ~2–3 miles (depending on route)
Difficulty: Moderate
Best for: A unique day trip and rugged coastal views
Mt. Battie, Camden
For one of the most classic coastal views in Maine, Mount Battie is always worth the stop.
Located in Camden Hills State Park, this short hike leads to a summit overlooking Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay. It’s a quick climb, but the view at the top feels anything but small.
You’ll find a stone tower at the summit, and on a clear day, you can see sailboats dotting the water and islands stretching out into the distance.
Good to know:
Distance: ~1 mile round trip
Difficulty: Easy to moderate
Best for: Sunset or a quick scenic stop

Great Head Trail, Acadia National Park
Starting near Sand Beach, this trail offers some of the best coastal views in Acadia with fewer people than the Beehive.
The Great Head Trail loops around dramatic granite cliffs in Acadia National Park, with constant views of the ocean and nearby islands.
It’s a great middle ground if you want something scenic without the intensity of a ladder hike.
Good to know:
Distance: ~1.5 miles loop
Difficulty: Moderate
Best for: Dramatic cliffs and ocean viewpoints

From the iconic cliffs of Acadia National Park to the rugged beauty of the Bold Coast, Maine offers some of the most stunning ocean-view hikes in New England.
