From volcanic ridges to mythical caves, here are five epic hikes to add to your bucket list.
There’s something magical about reaching a summit or walking through landscapes so surreal they feel like another planet. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone who just loves a good view after a challenging trek, these five hikes are some of the most awe-inspiring trails you can experience around the world.

1. Pico Areiro to Pico Ruivo, Madeira
This ridgeline trek connects the two highest peaks on Madeira Island, with dramatic views of jagged cliffs, lush valleys, and rolling clouds the entire way. The trail tunnels through volcanic rock and winds along steep staircases carved into the mountainside, making every step feel like an adventure.
Sunrise hikers are rewarded with golden light cascading over the peaks—but even on a cloudy day, the shifting mist creates an otherworldly vibe. If you're visiting Madeira, this is a must-do hike.
Distance: 6.2 mile out-and-back trail
Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours (one-way), depending on how often you stop to take pictures!

2. Kerlingarfjöll, Iceland
Tucked deep in Iceland’s Highlands, Kerlingarfjöll is a geothermal wonderland of rust-colored mountains, steaming vents, and snow patches that never quite melt. You can explore this area through a network of trails, but even a short hike here feels like stepping onto another planet.

The Hveradalir geothermal area is a highlight, with wooden paths that lead you through bubbling hot springs and surreal scenery. Just be sure to dress for rapidly changing weather—and don’t forget your camera.
Distance: Varies by route
Difficulty: Moderate
Best time to go: Summer (July–August)

3. Kalalau Trail, Haena State Park, Hawaii
One of the most iconic hikes in the United States, the Kalalau Trail hugs the breathtaking Napali Coast on Kauai’s north shore. With lush jungle, cliffside paths, and sweeping ocean views, it’s equal parts stunning and demanding.
The full trail leads to Kalalau Beach, a secluded paradise accessible only by foot, and passes through waterfalls and steep valleys along the way. For day hikers, heading to Hanakāpīʻai Falls (about 8 miles roundtrip) offers a taste of the trail without the full commitment.
Distance: 11 miles one way
Difficulty: Strenuous
Permits required for overnight hiking

4. Mt. Zas, Naxos, Greece
Mt. Zas is the tallest mountain in the Cyclades, standing at 3,290 feet. According to Greek mythology, this is where Zeus, the king of the gods, was raised, and you can even hike up to the cave where he supposedly spent his childhood. Beyond the legends, Mt. Zas (also known as Mount Zeus) offers panoramic views of the Aegean Sea and neighboring Cycladic islands.

The trail winds through rocky terrain and fragrant herbs, and at the summit, you’ll feel like you’re on top of the world. It's a rewarding climb and a unique blend of nature and mythology.
Distance: ~4.5 miles roundtrip (depending on route)
Difficulty: Moderate

5. Angel's Landing, Zion National Park, Utah
Angel’s Landing is not for the faint of heart—but it’s one of the most exhilarating hikes in the U.S. After a series of steep switchbacks (known as Walter’s Wiggles), you’ll reach the infamous narrow ridge section with chains bolted into the rock for safety.

The final push rewards you with sweeping views of Zion Canyon from 1,500 feet above the valley floor. It’s a hike that combines adrenaline, beauty, and a serious sense of accomplishment.
Distance: 5.4 miles roundtrip
Difficulty: Strenuous
Note: Permit required to hike final stretch (The Chains)
